Choosing Between NUST, UET, and FAST: What Actually Differs
NUST, UET, and FAST-NUCES sit at the top of most engineering and computer science applicants' shortlists — and for good reason, each has a strong reputation. But they differ meaningfully in how they select students, which should shape how you prepare and apply.
Different tests, different weighting
NUST relies almost entirely on its own NET (NUST Entry Test), which carries a reported 75% weight in the aggregate for its flagship engineering and computer science programmes at SEECS — meaning your FSc and Matric results matter comparatively little next to test-day performance. UET Lahore uses ECAT with a more balanced formula, weighting FSc at 50%, ECAT at 33%, and Matric at 17% — so a consistently strong academic record carries real weight alongside the test. FAST-NUCES splits differently again by programme type: its Computing and Business programmes weight the entry test (its own test, NTS-NAT, or SAT, whichever you sit) at 50%, while Engineering programmes shift to a 33/50/17 split closer to UET's model.
Multiple campuses, one formula (mostly)
FAST-NUCES applies the same formula across all five of its campuses (Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, and Chiniot-Faisalabad), so your target campus doesn't change your aggregate calculation — only seat availability and closing merit differ by campus. UET, by contrast, has genuinely separate formulas and separate merit lists across its Lahore, Taxila, and Peshawar campuses.
What this means for your prep strategy
If NUST is a serious option, prioritize dedicated NET preparation over chasing the last percentage point on your FSc — the math of a 75% test weight makes that trade-off clear. If UET or FAST Engineering is the target, a strong, consistent FSc performance protects you even on an average test day, since neither test carries more than half the total weight.
