Frequently Asked Questions

Where do these exchange rates come from?
From exchangerate-api.com, a third-party rate provider. Rates refresh once every 24 hours, so the figure you see is the latest daily rate, not a live tick-by-tick market feed.
Is this the rate I'll actually get at a bank or exchange company?
No. This is the mid-market rate — the real midpoint between buy and sell prices, with no markup. Banks, exchange companies, and remittance services add their own margin on top, typically 1-4%, so the rate you're quoted for an actual transaction will always be slightly less favourable than the figure shown here.
Why isn't my exact amount pre-filled?
The converter defaults to 1 of each currency, but you can type any amount directly into the Amount field — the result updates instantly using the same live rate.
Does this work for currency pairs that don't involve PKR?
This converter is built specifically for Pakistani Rupee conversions — every pair includes PKR on one side. For two foreign currencies, convert each to PKR separately and compare.

Whether you're checking what a remittance from the Gulf is worth in rupees, pricing an import invoice, or working out how much your Umrah trip will cost, the first number you need is the current exchange rate — and exchange rates move, sometimes meaningfully, from one day to the next. This converter pulls a live feed and updates once a day, so the figure you see reflects today's market, not a stale reference rate someone typed into a spreadsheet last month.

Mid-market rate vs. the rate you'll actually get

The rate shown here is the mid-market rate — the true midpoint between what buyers and sellers are willing to trade a currency pair at, with zero markup added. It's the same reference rate quoted by Google, XE, and Reuters, and it's the fairest "what is this money actually worth" figure available. It is not, however, the rate your bank, a money-exchange counter, or a remittance service like Western Union or a bank's own international transfer product will quote you. Every one of those businesses adds its own margin on top of the mid-market rate — commonly somewhere between 1% and 4%, sometimes more on less-traded currency pairs — because that margin is how they earn money on the transaction. A SAR 10,000 remittance converted at the mid-market rate and at a typical bank's retail rate can differ by several thousand rupees, so always confirm the actual rate being offered before committing to a transfer, not just the mid-market figure as a rough guide.

It's also worth knowing that the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) separately publishes its own official interbank exchange rate, used for regulatory and customs purposes — this can differ slightly from the commercial mid-market rate shown here, particularly during periods when the rupee is under pressure and the interbank and open/grey markets diverge.

How the conversion is calculated

The math itself is simple multiplication: your amount, multiplied by the current rate between the two currencies. The complexity is entirely in sourcing a trustworthy, current rate — which is why this calculator fetches live data from exchangerate-api.com rather than using a fixed table. Rates refresh once every 24 hours on the plan this site uses, so the number you see is, at most, a day old; it is not a tick-by-tick trading feed and shouldn't be treated as one for time-sensitive trading decisions.

A worked example

Someone working in Saudi Arabia sending home SAR 5,000 a month wants to know its rupee value before transferring. Typing 5000 into the amount field with SAR selected as the source and PKR as the target gives the mid-market conversion instantly — but the actual amount credited to a bank account in Pakistan will be somewhat lower, reduced by whatever spread and transfer fee the remittance channel charges. Comparing that mid-market figure against what two or three different transfer services actually quote is the single most effective way to avoid losing money to an uncompetitive exchange margin on a large or recurring transfer.

How this connects to your other calculations

If you're a freelancer or IT exporter billing clients in US Dollars or another foreign currency, convert your invoice total here for a quick rupee estimate, then run the actual figure through the Freelancer Tax Calculator or Income Tax Calculator to see what you owe on it — FBR taxes foreign-currency income based on its rupee value at the time of receipt, not at an arbitrary later date. If you're planning Hajj or Umrah, convert your estimated Saudi Riyal budget here before checking it against the Hajj/Umrah Budget Calculator, which breaks the cost down by category rather than as a single lump sum. And if you're comparing the true landed cost of an imported item, pair this with the Customs Duty Calculator — duty is typically assessed on the foreign-currency invoice value converted to rupees at the customs exchange rate, which can itself differ slightly from both the mid-market rate and the SBP interbank rate.

Common mistakes

The most common mistake is treating the mid-market rate shown by a converter like this as the rate you'll actually receive in hand — it never is, once a bank's or exchange company's margin is factored in, and that gap matters more the larger the amount being converted. A second common mistake is bookmarking a screenshot of a rate and relying on it days or weeks later; exchange rates, especially for the rupee against major currencies, can move by a meaningful percentage within a single week during volatile periods, so always check the current rate immediately before a transaction rather than trusting a remembered or saved number.
