How Lakh and Crore Numbering Actually Works (and Why It's Not Just 'Big Numbers')
If you've ever seen a Pakistani salary, property price, or cheque written out and wondered why the commas land in unfamiliar places, you've run into the Lakh/Crore numbering system — a genuinely different way of grouping large numbers, not just a translation of the Western one.
The core difference: grouping by two digits, not three
The Western system groups digits in threes after the first three (thousand, million, billion — each 1,000× the last). The South Asian system groups the first three digits together, then continues in pairs: 1,00,000 (one lakh = 100,000) and 1,00,00,000 (one crore = 10,000,000). Notice the comma placement itself differs — a number like twelve lakh is conventionally written 12,00,000, not 1,200,000.
Why this isn't just "big number" jargon
A Lakh (100,000) and a Crore (10,000,000) are precise, specific values — not vague terms for "a lot." Someone quoting a salary as "8 Lakh per year" means exactly Rs 800,000, in exactly the same way "$50,000" means a specific dollar figure. Mixing up the systems (assuming a Lakh means a million, for instance) leads to real errors in reading financial documents.
