GPA vs CGPA: Why Your University's Scale Actually Matters

Nearly every Pakistani university reports academic performance on a 4.0-point GPA/CGPA scale — but that shared top number hides real differences in how a percentage or letter grade actually converts into GPA points from one institution to the next.

GPA is per-semester, CGPA is cumulative

Your GPA is the credit-hour-weighted average of the grades you earned in a single semester. Your CGPA is the same calculation extended across every semester you've completed — which is why one weak semester affects your CGPA less and less as your total completed credit hours grow, while it can dominate an early GPA calculation when you've completed very little else.

The same percentage means a different grade at different universities

This is the part that surprises students most: IBA Karachi requires 93% for a top "A" grade, while the HEC-standard scale used by institutions like FAST-NUCES and COMSATS sets that bar closer to 85-90%. NUST and LUMS diverge further still, using relative (class-distribution-based) grading with no fixed percentage cutoff at all, plus different point increments — NUST uses half-point steps (4.0, 3.5, 3.0…) while LUMS uses US-style .7/.3 increments (4.0, 3.7, 3.3…) rather than the .67/.33 increments common elsewhere. Applying the wrong university's table to your own marks will give you a materially incorrect GPA.

Working out what you need going forward

Beyond just calculating where you stand, the more useful question is often "what do I need next semester to hit a target CGPA" — especially relevant for scholarship maintenance requirements, degree-completion minimums, or graduate-school applications with a stated CGPA cutoff. That's a straightforward algebra problem once you know your current CGPA and completed credit hours, but it's easy to get wrong by hand.
